  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and half the cocoa powder.
  3. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  5. Mix brown sugar with remaining cocoa powder and sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  6. Carefully pour hot water over the top - do not stir!
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is set and edges are bubbly.
  8. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving.
